What are Fillings?

A dental filling is a treatment used to repair a tooth that has been damaged by decay, trauma, or wear. The procedure involves removing the damaged portion of the tooth and filling the space with a material that restores its shape and function.

There are several types of dental filling materials that can be used, each with its own unique set of properties and benefits. The most common types of filling materials include:

  • Amalgam: This is a mixture of metals that includes mercury, silver, tin, and copper. Amalgam fillings are durable and long-lasting, but they are also noticeable in the mouth and are not used as frequently as other types of fillings.
  • Composite: This is a tooth-colored material that is made up of a mixture of glass or quartz filler and a resin binder. Composite fillings are popular because they can be matched to the color of the natural tooth and are not as noticeable as metal fillings.
  • Gold: Gold inlays and onlays are made in a laboratory and then bonded to the tooth, typically they are more expensive than other filling options, they are durable, long lasting and very well tolerated by patients
  • Ceramic: similar to composite but have higher strength and higher longevity, they are also bonded to the tooth and can be made to match the natural tooth color.

The dentist will choose the type of filling material that is best for you based on the location and extent of the damage, as well as your personal preferences and budget.

The filling procedure itself is typically quick and easy, and can usually be completed in just one visit to the dentist’s office. The dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort during the procedure. After the filling is placed, the dentist will check your bite and make any necessary adjustments to ensure that your teeth fit together properly.

Colored fillings are a good option for people who are concerned about the appearance of their teeth and want to avoid the noticeable appearance of metal fillings. They can be used in both front and back teeth, but it is important to note that, as with any other filling, they don’t increase the natural strength of the tooth, regular check ups and good oral hygiene will help maintain the longevity of the filling and the tooth health.
